SEO – It’s All About Pages, Not About Sites

When you do a search in Google it presents you with web pages, not web sites.

If you understand this concept your SEO life will become so much easier.

These days it is too difficult to get a page to ranks well for more than one or two keyword phrases. The good news is that content management systems like WordPress make it easy to create new pages – pages that can be optimised for one or two keyword phrases.

I see this problem frequently for tradespeople. They moosh all their service offering into one page, rather than having one page for each service.

By splitting up the big services page into a page for different service, you make it crytal clear to Google what that page should rank for.

Here’s an example for a plumber. The plumber could have optimised pages for the following:

blocked drains
new toilets
leaking toilets
blocked sewer
gas bbq installation
blocked stormwater drain
gas stove installation
leaking taps
bath installation
hot water system replacement
gas hot water

and so on. If all these services were listed on the same page, poor old Google would get very confused as to what to rank it for.

Remember, SEO is about pages, not about sites. Optimise one page per keyword phrase.
